Edge Computing and the future of Upstream Automation

As automation hardware for upstream O&G applications improves in terms of processing capabilities, it is important for end-users to understand how they can use these new technologies to improve operations. The myth has always been that upstream automation technologies have limited capabilities, and hence are used with a lot of constraints; this is specifically true for Edge Devices such as Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).

Enhancement in integrated circuit technologies, and hence the improvement in processing capabilities on Edge Devices, now allows technology companies to program custom applications nearer to the process rather than doing it on desktop computers. Analytics, fuzzy logic and pattern matching can now be pushed closer to the wellhead. Combined with latest IoT based Machine Learning platforms, these Edge Devices can provide operators with the capability to do specific number crunching activities right at the source of the data, and therefore reduce latency when it comes to decision making.

This presentation will discuss current trends in edge computing, with possibilities on how these technologies can shape the future of upstream O&G applications.
