Real-Time Modeling of Bit Position Between and Ahead of Surveys

Accurate positioning is important when drilling directional and horizontal wells aimed at specific subsurface targets. Unfortunately, due to the low communication bandwidth to the surface, wellbore survey measurements are typically taken infrequently. Between these survey stations, the bit position can only be estimated. This uncertainty in bit position between surveys often leads to steering errors resulting in missed targets, doglegs, and an increase in drilling time and cost.

In this webinar, we will look at a method for continuously modeling the bit position in real-time between surveys and ahead of surveys. Examples will be shown where this modeling has resulted in better decisions, leading to wells with less tortuousity and higher accuracy.
