An oil and gas blowout is an unlikely situation to occur in the modern day. Improvements made to industry drilling and completion standards in the last decade have reduced the occurrences of these events with the goal to eliminate them. In preparation for these scenarios, operators must submit a relief well contingency plan to regulatory authorities as a prerequisite to obtain a deep water drilling permit. The main challenge in relief well operations is managing the combined wellbore positional uncertainty of a target well and an interception well. To succeed in a relief well operation, an operator must use all available wellbore positioning techniques.

This presentation is based on the SPE-ISCWSA Well Interception Sub-Committee good practices. Techniques and methodologies will be introduced through a non-commercial lens. At the end of the session, the opportunity to ask questions and links to materials will be provided.
