Life Cycle Well Integrity: Imperatives for Developing New and Mature Assets - Talib SyedNov 13, 2021
More oil and gas wells are expected to be drilled globally (between 2010-2030) than have been drilled in the last 100 years. More wells being drilled in challenging drilling environments such as: high pressure/high temperature – HP/HT, deep/ultra-deep, steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), arctic, shale oil/gas hydraulic fracturing (HF), salt zone drilling and CO2 injection, has resulted inn well integrity challenges. Sound casing and cementing designs (tailored specifically to the well type and environment) become critical in enabling well integrity to be retained throughout its life cycle governance. This well design should be based on ISO-16530-1 and include design, construction, operational, intervention and abandonment phases. If this is not done, it could result in a compromised well barrier/well integrity or loss of well control.
This presentation also discusses well integrity challenges for HF shale wells, HP/HT wells and injectors; best practices for maintaining well integrity; and selected plugging and abandonment examples. Public awareness and social license to operate will also require operators’ assurance that the wells maintain their well integrity throughout their life cycle, and that processes are in place to provide zonal isolation. This will require industry collaboration and regulatory compliance to maintain life cycle well integrity.
The key takeaway from this presentation is that in order to maintain life cycle well integrity (in the development of both new fields as well as mature fields) well design should be based on ISO-16530-1 or equivalent API standards. This is critical to avoid/minimize potential catastrophic impacts to safety, environment, economic loss and reputation and to retain social license to operate.
