SPE Live: The UK National Robotarium - Thoughts on Skills for the Future of Energy

Research being developed at the National Robotarium, the UK’s center for robotics and artificial intelligence, highlights the enormous potential for adoption of underwater and remote-operated robots in the energy sector.

From inspection and maintenance of offshore wind turbines, to mapping 3D models of underwater assets and monitoring the impact on fish stocks, robots can provide solutions that meet industry challenges in relation to cost, safety and operational logistics. But service providers and operators need a wealth of information and data to support their planning before robotics can be effectively deployed within the sector. They also need to consider the skills required within teams to operate robotic systems, analyze data in real-time, and troubleshoot if something goes wrong.

To better understand and address these challenges, the National Robotarium is working with industry partners in the offshore energy sector to design a skills program that can identify the competencies and technological skills required to overcome development barriers within their workforce.

In this SPE Live, CEO of the National Robotarium, Stewart Miller, discusses the center’s approach to educating businesses and society about the potential for robotics and AI, and creating new robotic technologies with business need and usability at their core.
