Projects utilizing CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) have been implemented by the energy industry for over 50 years since the 1970s. Currently, in addition to EOR, there is significant industry interest in injecting CO2 for long-term geological sequestration. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects have stringent regulatory requirements aimed at protecting underground drinking water. Significant data collection and reservoir characterization is required to ensure formation characteristics and reservoir seals are adequate for storage. Furthermore, regulatory requirements require dynamic modelling of flow of fluids through porous media to understand CO2 plume behavior.

The aim of this webinar is to outline the specific technical requirements for long-term geological storage that regulators need to understand. The data and technical needs, and the regulatory approval process will be outlined. Technical challenges and issues faced by industry will be highlighted. New and emerging issues for regulators will be discussed.
