The aim of this presentation is to illustrate how an inadequate sizing methodology hinders scrubber performance. Old fashion practices still in used today, do not go deep enough into the fundamentals of the separation process, may rely on incorrect assumptions regarding flow distribution, and usually are not supported by representative test data. These shortcomings however, must be questioned when so often result in the need for expensive fixes just after plant startup. By making the design process itself the target of interest, this presentation provides a new perspective for the task of scrubber design. This important step, many times overlooked, can mean the difference between underperforming facilities in need of costly vessel upgrades post start-up and well-conceived facilities that can achieve the required separation performance from day one.
