Correct application of survey error models is a crucial part of collision avoidance and targeting calculations. Incorrect selection of error models can lead to wells loosing production, missing targets or worst case can lead to catastrophic collision incidents. All of which are costly. This webinar will discuss the ISCWSA error models. We’ll look under the hood and see how the tool models are built up and how that relates to survey tools used. Users selecting error models need to understand some of the assumptions inherent in the modelling and be able to select appropriate toolcodes depending on the tool and process applied in-hole. It’s essential that robust QAQC checks are applied to ensure that the survey data and the error model match. All of the considerations will be covered as well as the role of SPE Wellbore Technical Section (or ISCWSA) in the creation and dissemination of tool models. There will be time for an extended Q&A session after the presentation.

Speakers

Andy McGregorSpeakerThe speaker for this webinar is Andy McGregor, who has more than 20 years’ experience in downhole surveying and who was chair of the chair of the SPE Wellbore Technical Section error model sub-committee for ten years. Andy left university with a degree in Physics and Astronomy. His career has headed in a steady downward direction from there and he still hasn’t landed the curve. He has a PhD in Astronautics, did research on aircraft landing systems and then worked on artillery pointing. Then he got moved into the oil industry and worked in wellbore positioning. For many years he ran a successful survey management consultancy business, producing well planning software, survey correction algorithms and running magnetic in-field reference all around the globe. He was Weatherford SME for Survey Management for 9 years. Currently, he works in the Global Innovation team at Helmerich and Payne, developing automated drilling control algorithms and new techniques for drilling geothermal wells. Andy wrote much of the recent ISCWSA documentation, has written error model software, rolled out it to well planners and field staff and advised on uncertainty models to most of the supermajors.
David GibsonModeratorDavid Gibson is an engineer-turned-entrepreneur. He owns and manages Gibson Reports, a MWD and Directional Drilling market research firm as well as a partner and board member for several start-up companies. Launching his oilfield career as a UTA-trained Mechanical Engineer, David has a 15-year track record of working for both major and independent service providers in global and domestic onshore and offshore capacities operating a wide range of tools from survey-on-connection to offshore penta-combos. Serving in leadership roles ranging from Sub-Committee Chair to Board of Directors in several professional oil and gas associations like IADD, SPE, AADE and IADC, David is a public speaker and has been featured on 25+ different industry podcasts and livestreams to date.
